Practical Life

Practical Life is one of the 5 curriculum areas in the Montessori Education. It encompasses many activities and skills needed for a child to take care of him or herself (self-care), care for his or her environment (the classroom, at home, the community) and care for others. Many of the materials used and skills acquired are mirror images of what the child may see at home – dressing, dusting, washing, sweeping, pouring, cleaning up spills and so on. By learning sequential steps for each activity, it reinforces a beginning and end and hilights when a task is “done”. This is a very empowering aspect of the Montessori education as it teaches a child independence and self esteem.
